One of the most awaited Tamil movies of the year is the Suriya-Mohanlal starrer Kaappaan. Fans of the two actors have been waiting for the movie ever since the project was announced as it marks the coming together of two of the biggest names in the southern film industry. The action-packed trailer has only made the wait more excruciating.

Even as the release of the movie is just weeks away, the film ran into troubled waters. According to a News Minute report, on Monday, the Madras High Court heard a petition filed by a film writer claiming that Kaappaan, directed by K.V. Anand, is based on his story.

The petitioner, John Charles, who claimed that he has over 10 years of experience in cinema and television, accused the makers of the movie of plagiarism.

In his petition, he claimed that he had narrated the story to Anand in January 2017 and was waiting for the director's response. He said when he watched the teaser of the movie, he realised that the film has a storyline similar to the one he had narrated to the director.

He said he has filed the petition based on the observations he made from the trailer. He said he had presented the story, titled ‘Saravedi’, at the ministry of commerce and industry, department of industrial policy and promotion in 2016 for copyrights registration. He said it was registered the next year.

Charles sought an interim injunction from Madras High Court on the release of the movie. He has also urged the court to direct the makers of the movie to give him copyright fees besides displaying his name as the writer of the movie.

The next hearing is scheduled for September 4 while the movie is set to hit theatres on September 20.

Mohanlal would be playing the role of the prime minister of India in Kaappaan while Suriya would be essaying the role of a Special Protection Group (SPG) officer. The movie also stars Arya, Sayyeshaa, Boman Irani and Samuthirakani in the lead roles.
