Salt N' Pepper, released in 2011, was a sleeper hit in Mollywood. The film did not have big stars to boast of. The director, Aashiq Abu, was a lesser known name then, having directed just one movie, Daddy Cool.

The movie, a romantic drama which centered around food and two people who bond over food and stories around food and recipes, managed to strike a chord with the cine goers, thanks to a fresh storyline, some fine performances, great music and wonderful cinematography. The movie, starring Lal and Shweta Menon in the lead, also witnessed the image makeover of Baburaj, who was so far typecast, playing villainous characters. The movie was also remade in Tamil as Un Samayal Arayil, with Prakash Raj directing the movie and playing the lead role.

Reports now emerge that Salt N' Pepper will have a sequel titled Black Coffee. According to a News Minute report, the sequel will be directed by Baburaj himself.

Black Coffee will revolve around Baburaj, who played Babu, the chef of Kalathil Parambil Kalidasan, who was played by Lal. According to media reports, the movie will see Babu moving to an apartment and meeting with four women who live there.

Lal, Aashiq Abu and female leads in Salt N' Pepper, Shweta Menon and Mythili, will be seen in Black Coffee.

Baburaj had earlier directed two movies, Manushyamrugam and Black Dalia, both crime dramas. This would be the first time he would be directing a comedy. After Salt N' Pepper changed his tough guy image, he went on to be part of several comedy flicks, including Honey Bee and the Dileep-starrer Mayamohini.
