Another case of seduction operatives managing to get sensitive information from Indian defence personnel has come to light following the arrest of an Indian Air Force Wing Commander by the Delhi Police. Based on information passed by IAF intelligence, the officer was picked up on May 31 for allegedly leaking sensitive information regarding Indian military movements and troop deployments to a suspected Pakistani agent.
The Delhi Police are in the process of analysing how much sensitive data was actually passed on by the officer, who has reportedly been booked under the Official Secrets Act and is currently in judicial custody. Confirming the incident, the IAF told the media that the man was tracked for his suspicious activities for a while by its intelligence team, and an investigation is currently under way.
The Wing Commander, attached to a field unit, sent photos, videos, and other sensitive data to the woman whom he met on social media. The investigation proved that the woman managed to befriend the personnel when he was having a tough time in his personal life and exploited his emotional vulnerability. After contact was established via social media, the woman and the IAF officer began constantly video calling each other, reports said.
However, this was a honeytrap, and he was made to share sensitive documents and data with her via digital channels. More shockingly, he was asked to install an application on a colleague's mobile phone, News18 said in a report. This was a clear attempt to plant malware. However, it was not immediately known how much damage was done after he managed to accomplish the task. Neither was it clear if she blackamailed him in any manner, or convinced him to leak the information out of affection.
As per reports, the woman was acting at the behest of handlers in Pakistan. The app she wanted him to install on the other IAF officer's device could be remote-controlled spyware that can steal data, track locations, or even listen to and record conversations.
