The Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team (SKAT), the elite aerobatic display squadron of the Indian Air Force (IAF) known for its signature red-and-white Hawk Mk-132 jets and precision flying displays, completed 30 years on Tuesday, marking three decades of aerial excellence, high-risk manoeuvres and public outreach.
Since its debut in 1996, the team has carried out more than 800 aerial displays across India and overseas, becoming one of the most recognisable symbols of the IAF at major events such as Aero India and Air Force Day celebrations. Over the years, the team has performed in several countries, including China, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates.
“Celebrating 30 years of precision, passion and pride. The Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team of the Indian Air Force commemorates its 30th Anniversary on 26 May, 2026, at Air Force Station Bidar, Karnataka,” the IAF posted on X.
“From its debut in 1996 to over 800 breathtaking displays across India and abroad, SKAT continues to inspire with unmatched professionalism, precision flying and teamwork. Living by their motto ‘Sadaiva Sarvottam’ meaning ‘Always the Best’, the team symbolises the spirit and excellence of the Indian Air Force,” it added.
The IAF also released a commemorative video describing the aerobatic squadron as “the ambassadors of the Indian Air Force”.
SKAT continues to remain a major crowd-puller at national events. Earlier this month, the team performed an air display over the Somnath temple in Gujarat during the Somnath Amrut Mahotsav celebrations, creating the Indian tricolour in the sky using indigenous smoke pods. Prime Minister Narendra Modi watched the performance alongside senior state leaders.
Last year, the team also performed over the banks of the Ganga in Patna during Shaurya Diwas celebrations marking the valour of freedom fighter Veer Kunwar Singh. The display marked the first-ever performance by SKAT in Patna.
