The government, on Tuesday, appointed senior IPS officer B. Srinivasan as the Director General of the National Security Guard (NSG).
A 1992 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Bihar cadre, Srinivasan will head the country's counter-terrorism force until August 31, 2027.
“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved appointment of Srinivasan as Director General, NSG, from the date of joining the post and up to August 31, 2027 i.e., the date of his superannuation,” an order from the ministry of personnel read.
The post was lying vacant after incumbent Nalin Prabhat was named as the new chief of the Jammu and Kashmir Police. Following Prabhat's appointment, Director General of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Anish Dayal Singh has been holding additional charge of the NSG.
Srinivasan is currently serving as the director of Bihar Police Academy, Rajgir.
The NSG, established in 1986, operates under the ministry of home affairs and is modeled after special forces like the British SAS and the German GSG-9. Also known as "black cats", the elite counter-terrorism force comprises two main components: the Special Action Group (SAG), and the Special Ranger Group (SRG).
