Samvat 2080: Sensex, Nifty begin new year on a positive note; Coal India, UPL lead gains

Broader markets outperformed the indices with Nifty Smallcap closing 1.2 pc higher

Benchmark stock indices Sensex and Nifty began Samvat 2080 on a positive note, with Sensex closing 350 points higher at 65,250 and Nifty 100 points higher at 19,523 in the one-hour special mahurat trading on Sunday.

Muhurat trading is a symbolic trading session conducted by Indian stock exchanges on Diwali, a Hindu festival considered auspicious for new beginnings, including investments.

The broader markets outperformed the indices with Nifty Smallcap index closing 1.2 per cent higher.

Among sectors, IT was the biggest gainer, rising 0.75 per cent. All sectoral indices ended in green.

Coal India, UPL, Infosys, Eicher Motors, Bajaj Auto and Wipro were the top gainers. Coal India rose by 2.60 per cent to close at Rs 336, while UPL jumped 1.57 per cent to close at Rs 557.85.

Britannia, Bajaj Finserv and Appollo Hospital lagged.

During the Samvat year 2079 ended on Friday, the BSE Sensex jumped 5,073.02 points or 8.47 per cent, while the Nifty climbed 1,694.6 points or 9.55 per cent.
