Cyrus Mistry, the former chairman of Tata Sons, was killed in a road accident near Mumbai on Sunday. He was 54.
Police said Mistry was travelling to Mumbai from Ahmedabad when his Mercedes car hit a road divider at Charoti Naka in Palghar district around 3.15 pm.
The accident took place on a bridge over the Surya river.
There were four people in the car—Mistry; Anahita Pandole (55), a well-known gynecologist in Mumbai; her husband Darius Pandole (60) and Jahangir Pandole, brother of Darius.
Both Mistry and Darius died on the spot while Pandole and Darius have been shifted to a hospital.
Police said Pandole was driving the car while Mistry and Jahangir were in the back seats.
According to police, primary information suggests that the car was over speeding and tried to overtake another vehicle from the wrong side (from the left).
The body of Mistry has been shifted to the Kasa Rural Hospital for postmortem.
Shocking, says PM Modi
“Untimely demise of Cyrus Mistry shocking; he was promising business leader who believed in India’s economic prowess,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted.
He said Mistry's passing away was a big loss to the world of commerce and industry.
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP Supriya Sule said Mistry was like a brother to her. "His death is shocking for me. I have seen his elevation as the Tata Sons head as well as the subsequent turbulence. He and his wife had gone through a lot of struggle in the last four years. I still cannot believe that he has passed away," she said.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said Mistry was not just a successful industrialist, but a young and visionary entrepreneur as the business world looked up to him with hope.
"His death is a loss not just for the Mistry family, but for the entire business world," the CM said.
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said he has asked the state police to conduct a detailed investigation into the accident in which former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry was killed.
Fadnavis said he was shocked and deeply pained to know about the demise of Mistry (54) in the unfortunate accident near Palghar adjoining Mumbai.
"Spoke to DGP and instructed for detailed investigations," tweeted Fadnavis, who is also the state home minister.
Mistry took over as the sixth chairman of the Tata Sons in December 2012 after Ratan Tata announced his retirement. He was ousted from the position in October 2016.
