ISPs try to incentivise working from home with data rate discounts

As social distancing measures necessity employees of private and public sector companies alike to work from home, data providers like Reliance Jio, state-owned BSNL and Hyderabad-based Act Fibernet have all announced perks for their users in order to help them work from home with ease.

BSNL announced that broadband services would be offered free of charge for one month for those who have a BSNL landline.

“Broadband service is being offered free of charge for one month to all citizens across the country, who have BSNL landline and do not have any broadband, so that they can use this service either to work from home, educate from home or anything that can minimise the need to move outdoor," BSNL Director (CFA) Vivek Banzal said in a statement.

Under the plan, users will get 10mbps speeds capped at 5GB a day (and 1mbps after that). The new ‘Work@Home” broadband plan is being offered in all circles for existing BSNL landline users. In addition, those seeking new connections will have their installation charges waived off for those seeking copper cable connections, though new subscribers would have to pay for the modem. Those who buy optical fiber connections will still have to pay installation charges.

Reliance Jio announced upgrades to its data rates, doubling some of its vouchers for existing subscribers. The Rs 51 plan for 3GB of Data now offers 6GB + 5-- minutes talk time; the Rs 101 plan for 6GB of data now offeres1 12GB with 1,000 minutes talk time. The Rs 11 pack that now offers 800MB of data compared to 400MB before.  

Broadband provider Act Fibernet told its customers that it would be upgrading their speed at no extra cost. “To enhance your work efficiency at home due to the present scenario, we are upgrading your speeds to 300 Mbps and providing you unlimited FUP for March 2020 at NO EXTRA COST. To avail the offer, log on ACT Fibernet App,” the company said.

Airtel announced that it would not be charging installation and security deposit for new subscribers of its Xstream Fibre service. Airtel CEO Randeep Sekhon told the Economic Times that Home Broadband customers were upgrading to faster speeds and higher quotas to support their work and study from home.
