Thomas Cook, the UK's oldest travel firms, collapsed putting over 22,000 jobs at risk including 9,000 in the United Kingdom alone. The travel firm which survived two World Wars shut shop completely after talks for a rescue package failed. The UK government is engaged in the biggest peacetime repatriation effort to bring home its citizens who are stranded abroad. What happens to your existing booking?
Your holiday will be cancelled, but the booking amount will be refunded. This is covered by what is known as Air Travel Organiser's Licence (ATOL) scheme. A special website has been set up to take you through making a claim. The civil aviation authority (CAA) will be launching a service to manage all refunds on September 30.
Can you book another holiday?
Customers cannot opt to book another holiday. They are entitled to a refund of their original booking only.
What all is covered under the refund?
The refund will cover the total cost of the package which was bought and whatever that included. Extra services such as cab hires or other reservations that customers may have purchased outside of the package will not be covered. However, claims for these can be made with their travel insurer depending on what insurance they may have.
What if only flight were booked through Thomas Cook?
You will not be refunded any money because the ATOL protection only covers packages. Any travel insurance purchased along with the flight may be the only relief.
Would you have to pay hoteliers extra?
No. All hoteliers would be paid under the ATOL scheme. So you will not be charged anything extra.
What if you are already on holiday?
The British government is arranging special flights to get people home. This service is available till October 6.
What happens to Thomas Cook flights?
All flights have been grounded. What happens to them now remains to be seen.
What happens to Thomas Cook India?
Thomas Cook India will not be impacted by the collapse of the UK travel firm. Thomas Cook India was acquired by Fairfax Financial Holdings via a 77 per cent stake. Thomas Cook UK hasn't been a promoter of Thomas Cook India since 2012.
