Ode to Delhi's 'most wanted' Don

Delhi's untouchable Don breathed his last on July 15

He was the AAP legislator's man Friday, he 'allegedly' faithfully assisted the MLA when he assaulted his wife, he was the MLA's most trusted bodyguard during his frequent visits to the police station. He was Delhi's (al)most wanted Don, and he breathed his last on the night of July 15.

To those of you who have been Netflixing and chilling with the best skunk you can score, Don was a fairly popular name in the national capital. Let me try to place things in perspective. Don was your friendly neighbourhood (well, almost as friendly a vigilante as Spidy, but not quite there yet) guy in Delhi, who is no stranger to headlines, prime time and web space. He and the MLA were 'allegedly' partners in crime. When the man wanted a bit of rest from assaulting his wife, he thought it is only fit that his best friend take on from where he left. And could you blame Don for rising to the occasion? After all, he had pledged allegiance to the man, like his kind always does.

And this was how Don shot to fame. He was arrested along with his best friend, for the cops thought the guy would tell on his friend. But Don is no rat, Don can't be a rat, he wouldn't snitch. Snitching would be the last thing Don would do. For, Don was always faithful.

The law couldn't touch Don. Not only because he has his legion of followers who would dote on every move of his kind and wax eloquent about how his kind is way better than mere mortals who occupy the Earth. He was given a clean chit by the court which found that the allegations against him were unfounded. He was, for the want of a better word, 'Untouchable'.

To call someone Don, he must sure occupy a place of high honour, you gotta respect him, offer your friendship and fealty and even call him Godfa...ah, damn, that's Don Corleone. Where was I, oh yes, Don and his man.

Not quite unlike Vito Corleone, Tony Montana or the the nation's latest obsession Ganesh Gaitonde, Don had his beginnings humble. He came to the man who called him his friend, gave him almost everything and asked him only one thing in return. His unflinching devotion.

Being faithful has its perks, I suppose. Don's faithfulness served him well, for the nation waited with bated breath when he fell ill. His heart ailment tugged at our hearts, garnered much wishes and prayers. Don was loved.

Don, AAP MLA Somnath Bharti’s pet Labrador, breathed his last on Sunday. Announcing the demise of his dog, the MLA tweeted, “DON IS NO MORE!..landed at airport 4m 2 days long Chhattisgarh trip 4 party work, reached home at 12 midnight, straight went to my dog don, he looked at me, wagged tail, passed urine and stool, tightened his body and left us for all time to come...amazing is God's creation!”
