Lucknow, Nov 4 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh Election Department will undertake a special drive to enrol eligible voters, particularly young people and women, in the electoral rolls during the Special Summary Revision-2027, Chief Electoral Officer Navdeep Rinwa said on Wednesday.
Rinwa said district election officers (DEOs) have been directed to coordinate with various government departments and institutions to identify eligible citizens whose names are missing from the electoral rolls.
The exercise will be conducted with January 1, 2027 as the qualifying date. Electoral rolls of assembly constituencies will be matched with those of panchayats and urban local bodies to identify eligible citizens who are yet to register as voters.
Electoral registration officers (EROs) have been instructed to facilitate the filling of Form 6 for eligible citizens who are not enrolled in the electoral roll of any assembly constituency in the country.
The Food and Civil Supplies Department will also be involved in the exercise. Eligible residents aged 18 years and above whose names are missing from the electoral rolls will be identified through ration cards registered at fair price shops. They will subsequently be assisted in filling Form 6.
To increase youth participation, Electoral Literacy Clubs (ELCs) set up in educational institutions will be activated. Eligible students, particularly those in the 18-19 age group, will be identified and encouraged to register as voters.
Assistant electoral registration officers (AEROs) will coordinate with designated ELC coordinators to carry out the exercise in mission mode.
The election department will also seek the support of organisations working with young people, including the National Service Scheme (NSS), National Cadet Corps (NCC), Nehru Yuva Kendra, Yuvak Mangal Dal and Bharat Scouts and Guides.
Rinwa said special efforts would also be made to increase women's participation in the electoral process, as the number of women voters in the existing electoral rolls was disproportionately lower than that of men.
For this, the department will seek the support of the Women and Child Development, Health and Rural Livelihoods departments, besides ASHA workers, auxiliary nurse midwives (ANMs), anganwadi workers and self-help group representatives, known as 'Samuh Sakhis'.
ASHA workers, ANMs and anganwadi workers will identify eligible women missing from the electoral rolls during their household visits and facilitate the filling of Form 6.
Similarly, Samuh Sakhis will be engaged to identify eligible women in rural areas through women's self-help groups and help ensure their enrolment, he added.
