Guwahati, Oct 30 (PTI) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday paid tribute to the victims of the 2008 serial blasts that left 88 people dead, terming it one of the darkest chapters in the state’s history.
He asserted that Assam will never return to those days and will remain peaceful.
Nine serial blasts – three each in Guwahati and Kokrajhar, two in Barpeta Road and one in Bongaigaon – were carried out by the Ranjan Daimary faction of the militant outfit National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) on October 30, 2008, killing 88 people and leaving more than 500 injured.
“On this solemn day, I remember the victims of the October 30 Serial bomb blasts which rocked Guwahati,” Sarma said in a social media post.
“I can never forget that fateful day which shook the collective conscience of our nation and is one of the darkest chapters in Assam's history,” he said, paying tributes to the victims.
The chief minister affirmed that Assam “shall never return to those days and ensure that Assam remains a peaceful and prosperous state in the years to come”.
A special CBI court had in January 2019 convicted 15 people in the case, of whom 10 were given life imprisonment, including Daimary.
Daimary was arrested in Bangladesh in 2010 and was lodged in the Guwahati Central Jail after being handed over to the country.
In September 2022, the Gauhati High Court upheld the Special Court's sentence of life imprisonment for Daimary along with six of his accomplices. It acquitted four others in connection with the serial bomb blasts.
