Kolkata, May 6 (PTI) A TMC councillor was arrested in connection with an old case of carrying live ammunition without valid documents at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, police said on Wednesday.
The accused, identified as Amirul Sekh Islam, a councillor of Ward 14 of Pujali municipality under Budge Budge Assembly constituency, was taken into custody on Tuesday night after he failed to produce a valid licence for ammunition recovered from his baggage during his visit to Kolkata airport to catch a flight last September within the stipulated time, a police officer said.
According to the complaint lodged by CISF sub-inspector Gopal Shaw, the incident dates back to September 21, 2025, when the accused arrived at the airport to board an Indigo flight.
"During routine baggage scanning, an empty magazine along with six rounds of 7.65 mm ammunition was detected in the passenger's luggage," a police officer said.
The accused had initially claimed that he possessed a valid licence and sought time to furnish the documents, the officer added.
"Considering that he is an elected public representative, he was granted seven days to produce the necessary papers. However, he failed to submit any valid documents within the given period," the officer said.
Subsequently, a case under relevant sections of the Arms Act was registered at the airport police station, and the accused was arrested on Tuesday.
"Possession of live ammunition without a valid licence is a punishable offence. The investigation is underway," the officer added.
Police said further legal proceedings have been initiated in the matter.
