Two militants arrested in Manipur

Imphal, Oct 8 (PTI) Security forces arrested two militants, belonging to separate proscribed outfits, for their alleged involvement in extortion activities in Manipur’s Imphal West and East districts, police said on Wednesday.
    A 37-year-old cadre of the banned People’s Liberation Army was apprehended from his residence at Kwakeithel in Imphal West district on Tuesday for allegedly extorting money from the public, a senior officer said.
    He also said a 25-year-old member of the outlawed Kangleipak Communist Party (PWG) was arrested from Kongpal Khaidem Leikai in Imphal East district on Monday for alleged extortion activities.
    Security forces have been conducting search operations in Manipur since ethnic clashes broke out two years ago.
    More than 260 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in ethnic violence between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023.
    The Centre had imposed the President’s rule in Manipur after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned.
    The state assembly, which has a tenure till 2027, has been put under suspended animation.
