Chandigarh, Aug 14 (PTI) Punjab Police has arrested two operatives of Lawrence Bishnoi gang facing several criminal cases from the Patiala-Ambala highway near Shambhu village, officials said on Thursday.
Police seized an Austria-made 9 mm Glock pistol and six live cartridges from their possession.
DGP Gaurav Yadav said the arrested persons have been identified as Akshay Delu and Ankit Bishnoi alias Kakkar, both residents of Khairpur village in Abohar.
The accused were operating on the instructions of their foreign-based handlers identified as Anmol Bishnoi and Arzoo Bishnoi, the officer said.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused fled to Nepal after committing a murder and returned on the directions of their foreign-based handlers to commit a "sensational" crime in Punjab, the DGP said.
He said both the accused have an extensive criminal history with over 15 heinous crime cases pertaining to murder, attempt to murder, extortion, Arms Act and the Narcotics Drugs Psychotropic Substances Act registered against them in Punjab, Delhi, Rajasthan and Gujarat.
They were also wanted for the recent murder of Bharat Ratan alias Vicky, which took place in Fazilka on May 2, he added.
The DGP said further investigations are going on to establish the forward and backward linkages in this case.
Sharing operational details, ADGP, Anti Gangster Task Force, Promod Ban, said a tip-off was received regarding the duo's attempt to enter the state.
Acting swiftly, special teams were formed which tracked down the accused persons on the Ambala-Patiala Highway and arrested them in an early morning operation, the ADGP said.
Sharing the modus operandi of the gang, DIG Gurmeet Chauhan said after executing the criminal task assigned by their handlers, the gang members usually fled to Nepal and used hideouts provided by their associates or foreign handlers.
