MCD takes down over 1 lakh posters and hoardings in two months

New Delhi, Jul 19 (PTI) The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has undertaken an extensive drive to curb defacement of public spaces and removed over one lakh posters, banners and hoardings across various zones between May and June, sources on Saturday said.
     The West Zone led the clean-up effort removing over 41,000 posters, 2,812 banners and 4,733 hoardings, according to a report.
     In comparison, the Karol Bagh Zone removed 14,922 posters and 3,209 banners.
     Additionally, over 100 banners were revoked by the civic body, as per the data presented to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a review meeting.
     South, Keshav Puram and West zones also recorded significant action, with Shahdara North removing 4,852 banners. The South Zone removed 13,794 posters.
     The other zones such as Narela, Central and Najafgarh too witnessed substantial clean-up efforts, with thousands of illegal posters and banners removed.
     In contrast, the Central Zone reported minimal defacement, removing only 159 posters and 42 hoardings.
     According to the report, the zonal sanitation and licensing wings have been tasked with removing or correcting defacement and issuing challans to violators. The maintenance wing is actively repainting defaced walls and securing funds under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives for murals and beautification projects.
     The MCD is also conducting regular Information, Education and Communication (IEC) activities to raise public awareness about the negative impacts of urban defacement.
     The report further said that inspections of roads and public places by the zonal deputy commissioners are being conducted on a regular basis to ensure compliance.
