Bhopal, Jul 17 (PTI) A part of a road in Maharana Pratap Nagar area of Madhya Pradesh capital Bhopal caved in on Thursday, though no one was hurt, an official said.
Amid protests by the opposition Congress over the incident that took place near the board office intersection at 12 noon, Bhopal Municipal Corporation chairperson Kishan Raghuvanshi said such incidents were "natural" during heavy rains.
Civic personnel arrived at the spot immediately and barricaded parts of the road to avoid any untoward incident.
"Madhya Pradesh is today moving towards becoming self-reliant but the Congress sees only evil in everything. It is natural for the roads to collapse in the rain. Asphalt and rain are enemies of each other. Therefore such incidents are natural," Raghuvanshi claimed.
Whenever such incidents take place, BMC personnel work diligently to repair them, he added.
Hitting out at the administration, MP Congress chief Jitu Patwari, in a post on X, said, "Chief Minister, your PWD (Public Works Department) in Bhopal has again made us aware of the 'Gaurav-Path'! This pothole is also 08 feet! The state is shocked by this pace of progress!"
Congress spokesperson Abhinav Baroliya, who along with other party workers protested at the cave in site, said such incidents are happening continuously in the state because the roads are being built on "commission" (kickbacks).
"The condition of roads is the same in the entire state. Crores of rupees are spent on roads and as soon as the rains start, their reality comes to the fore. This exposes the corruption of the government," Baroliya alleged.
