Mumbai, Jul 15 (PTI) Mumbai has recorded an increase in malaria and chikungunya cases between January and July 2025 (till July 14) as compared to the same period of the previous year, the city civic body said on Tuesday.
However, a decline was noticed in cases of leptospirosis and other water-borne diseases, including gastroenteritis and hepatitis, during the period under review, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said in its report - Monsoon-Related Diseases.
"The early onset of monsoon (in May) this year created a favourable environment for vector-borne diseases, leading to an observed increase in malaria, dengue and chikungunya cases in 2025 (up to July 14) compared to 2024," said a BMC statement.
The metropolis has reported 3,490 cases of malaria and 179 of chikungunya so far in 2025 (till July 14) as compared to 2,852 and 46 cases, respectively, recorded in the corresponding period of the previous year, said the statement.
The financial capital registered 136 cases of leptospirosis, 4,831 of gastroenteritis, and 477 of hepatitis during January-July 14 as compared to 281, 5,439 and 493 infections, respectively, in the same period of the last year, it said.
In July, the BMC examined 32,13,967 people and collected 1,01,712 blood samples for contact tracing.
In its advisory on prevention of vector-borne diseases, including malaria, dengue and chikungunya, the civic body has urged citizens to ensure there is no stagnant water in or around their homes and in the vicinity of their buildings.
The BMC has also advised citizens to follow proper cough etiquette and wash hands frequently with soap.
