Telangana to mount pressure on Centre over Godavari Krishna river water share

Hyderabad, Jul 13 (PTI) The Telangana government on Monday decided to intensify efforts and "mount pressure" on the Centre to safeguard its rightful share of Krishna and Godavari river waters.

The state government would push for central approvals for its projects on Krishna river, seek finalisation of water allocations and request financial assistance for the projects.

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy directed officials to take steps to protect the state's interests in Godavari river waters and find "permanent solutions" to what he termed as years of neglect, a state government release said.

A Telangana government delegation would meet Union Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil in New Delhi on July 16 and press for its demands, including securing state's share in river waters, approvals for under-construction and new projects and water allocations, it said.

It accused the previous BRS government of "failing" to secure the state's share in Krishna waters despite being in power for 10 years.

The BRS regime had agreed to Telangana getting 299 TMC of water as its share, while neighbouring Andhra Pradesh got 512 TMC, it said.

The release further alleged that the BRS government remained silent while Andhra diverted Krishna water and built "illegal" projects.

As per the directives of the CM, state Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar REddy has sent a letter to the Union Jal Shakti Minister, the release added.
