Kalaburagi (Karnataka), Jul 11 (PTI) An armed gang allegedly looted nearly 3 kg of gold from an ornament manufacturing shop in Saraf Bazaar here on Friday after holding a goldsmith at gunpoint.
The incident occurred at around 12.30 pm when the victim, a native of Kolkata, was working at the shop.
According to police, two men first barged into the shop situated on the first floor of a commercial complex here. Later, two more joined them. They allegedly threatened the victim by brandishing knives and firearms and forced him to open the locker.
They gagged him and tied his hands with tape and looted 2.5 to 3 kg gold ornaments worth crores of rupees.
Citing preliminary investigation, a senior police officer said the workers at the gold manufacturing shop here are basically from Kolkata. They have been doing that job for the past 15-20 years.
They used to sell the gold ornaments to the retailers, he said.
"A case has been registered in this regard. We are scanning through the CCTV cameras to collect evidence. We have formed five teams and are carrying out searches across various parts of the city. We will soon arrest the accused. We are investigating it from all the aspects," he added.
The official said the entire incident took place in a well-planned, and coordinated sequence.
Police suspect that the gang must have done recce of the area for the robbery because the area is crowded and it's not easy to flee.
Fingerprint experts and crime branch personnel, along with a canine squad, visited the crime spot and collected evidence, police said, adding that further investigation is underway.
