Thane, Jul 11 (PTI) A man was arrested for allegedly abducting a 16-year-old girl from Kalyan railway station in Thane district and sexually assaulting her several times onboard a train headed towards his native Akola, a police official said on Friday.
Gajanan Shivdas Chavan (30) was held from Shekapur village, from where he hails, in Patur taluka on Thursday, the Kalyan railway police station official said.
"Chavan, who was staying with his brother in Titwala, met the girl at Kalyan station on June 29. He took her to his brother's house, then to Kasara on a suburban train before taking an express train heading to Akola. He sexually assaulted her on the train. He then took the girl to his village by bus," the official said.
"He raped her again before abandoning the girl at Akola railway station and fleeing. The girl's ordeal came to light after police questioned the distressed girl there. Following this, a case was registered under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for kidnapping, repeated rape and other offences on her father's complaint," the official said.
The case was then transferred to Kalyan railway police, he said.
A team under Kalyan railway police senior inspector Pandhari Kande and inspector Laxman Chavan zeroed in on the accused through CCTV footage enroute and held him from Akola with the help of Partur police.
"Chavan was produced in a court here, which remanded him in four-day police custody," Kande said.
