New Delhi, Jul 10 (PTI) A 19-year-old alleged gang member, wanted in a recent case of stabbing and firing, was apprehended following a brief exchange of fire in northwest Delhi’s Majlis Park area in the early hours of Thursday, police said.
The accused, identified as Nitin alias Chor, sustained a bullet injury on his left leg during the encounter and is currently undergoing treatment, they said.
"The encounter took place around 3.50 am near Shah Alam Band Marg close to Majlis Park Metro Station after police received specific input regarding the absconding accused's movement in the area," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) Bhisham Singh said.
Nitin was allegedly involved in a violent assault and firing incident on July 4 in Jahangirpuri, where a man named Azharuddin was attacked with a knife and shot at.
The attack took place when Azharuddin and his friend were on their way to buy snacks near Sunday Bazar Road in Jahangirpuri when they were confronted by four youths, including Nitin and an associate identified as Shivam alias Laddu, Singh said.
"Nitin allegedly stabbed Azharuddin multiple times, while Shivam fired at him as he tried to flee. The attack was reportedly carried out to establish gang dominance in the area," the police officer added.
During interrogation, Nitin admitted to his involvement in the attack and named his three associates, police claimed. They further said that two of the associates, both minors, have already been apprehended, while efforts are on to trace the remaining co-accused.
Nitin is a known associate of a local gang operating in the Jahangirpuri area and is suspected to be involved in various criminal activities as well, police said.
Sharing information about Nitin's arrest, police said that based on intelligence, a team was deployed in the Majlis Park area to intercept him. When the police personnel noticed a suspect on a motorcycle and signalled him to stop, he abandoned his vehicle and attempted to flee. The police instructed him to surrender, but the accused opened fire on the police.
A warning shot was fired in the air and asked him to surrender again, the DCP said. However, Nitin fired another round, which hit a police officer’s body protector. In response, a single round was fired, targetting the lower body of the accused, hitting him in the left leg.
He was immediately overpowered and taken into custody. Police recovered a country-made pistol, two empty cartridges, a mobile phone and a motorcycle from his possession.
A fresh case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Arms Act has been registered for the encounter incident, the officer added.
