Thane, Jul 8 (PTI) The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has directed for a month-long survey of all unauthorised non-residential and commercial constructions Yeoor hill area here adjoining the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, officials said.
The move comes in the wake of repeated violations, including loud music, firecrackers and unauthorised parties being held, disrupting the ecological balance of the region.
"There has been a large-scale rise in unauthorised commercial constructions in Yeoor. Activities such as dinners, weddings, parties, and the use of loudspeakers, bands and firecrackers continue till late night. These are completely prohibited in environmentally sensitive zones," TMC Commissioner Saurabh Rao said in a release issued on Monday.
To address this, the commissioner has instructed for a thorough survey to identify and document all unauthorised non-residential constructions and determine if approved residential premises were being misused for commercial purposes.
The TMC, in coordination with the forest department and police, will serve closure notices to all illegal commercial setups, the release said.
The TMC chief also said action has been taken against several unauthorised sports turfs in the Yeoor area.
To ensure holistic management of Yeoor, a coordination committee comprising senior officials from the TMC, forest, police, revenue departments and NGOs will soon be constituted.
"No unauthorised construction will be tolerated in Yeoor. This ecologically sensitive region must be preserved," Rao said.
