Khunti (Jharkhand), Jun 29 (PTI) A traditional village head was shot and hacked to death in Jharkhand's Khunti district, police said on Sunday.
The incident took place in Kadetubid village in Marangdha police area around 11 pm on Saturday, they said.
The deceased was identified as Balaram Munda, a tribal village head of Landup panchayat.
Khunti Superintendent of Police (SP) Manish Toppo said that around 10-12 people were allegedly involved in the incident.
"Some suspects have been detained. The police are conducting raids to arrest the other accused," he said.
According to villagers, around 12 armed men barged into Balaram's house, and after an argument, opened fire at him and hacked him to death with a sharp weapon.
Former minister and senior BJP leader Neelkanth Singh Munda said Balaram was not only a traditional village head but also a BJP worker and a two-time member of the panchayat samiti.
"The state's law and order has crumbled. If a village head is not safe, who will take guarantee of the security of the common man," Munda asked.
