New Delhi, Jun 27 (PTI) The nephew of gangster Manjit Mahal was shot dead in front of his daughter, who also sustained a bullet injury in the attack allegedly carried out by unidentified assailants in the Bawana area on Friday morning, an official said.
The victim was identified as Deepak (38), the official added. The case is suspected to be linked to an ongoing rivalry between the Kapil Sangwan alias Nandu gang and the Manjeet Mahal gang.
However, police sources said that Deepak had no recent contact with Mahal and no prior involvement in any criminal case.
The incident occurred when Deepak, a share trader by profession, had gone for a morning walk with his 10-year-old daughter. His father was sitting outside their house at the time. The attack took place just 700–800 metres away from their home near Bhagwan Parshuram Mandir Road in Nangal Thakran village, a senior police officer said.
"Deepak suffered multiple bullet injuries and died on the spot. His daughter received a gunshot wound on her hand during the attack. Both were immediately taken to Maharishi Valmiki Hospital, where Deepak was declared dead, and his daughter was reported to be out of danger," police said.
The girl suffered a bullet injury on her right hand and was discharged after treatment, the police added in a statement.
"Initial investigation suggests that the shooters knew all the entry and exit routes of the house. They likely conducted reconnaissance of the area and were waiting for the right time," a police source said.
The source added that the moment Deepak came out of his house and walked a short distance, the attackers approached and opened fire at close range.
A case has been registered, and multiple teams have been formed to identify and apprehend the accused. The motive behind the killing is yet to be ascertained, officials said.
Forensic teams have examined the crime scene, and CCTV footage from nearby areas is being reviewed, the officer added.
Following legal and medical procedures, the body was transferred to BSA Hospital for post-mortem examination and later handed over to the family.
Police sources said the investigation is being conducted from all angles, including the long-standing feud between Mahal and United Kingdom-based gangster Kapil Sangwan alias Nandu.
"Deepak was a share trader and the nephew of Mahal. Teams are probing whether the incident was related to property issues or gang rivalries," a source said. He is survived by his wife, two children, and parents.
However, sources also noted that there had been no gang war between the Sangwan and Manjeet Mahal gangs in the past few months.
Police earlier stated that Sangwan and Mahal — both residents of Najafgarh — have been at involved in a feud since 2015, when Mahal and his men allegedly killed Sangwan's brother-in-law, Sunil alias 'Doctor'.
On the instructions of his elder brother Jyoti Prakash alias Baba, who is currently lodged in Tihar Jail, Sangwan had formed a team of associates and killed Nafe Singh alias 'Mantri', a close aide of Mahal, the officer said. Jyoti Prakash is the other half of the infamous Kapil-Jyoti Baba gang.
In 2017, Sangwan allegedly gunned down Mahal's father, Shri Krishna, in his house in Najafgarh.
Sangwan, who is wanted under a Red Corner Notice, remains a key suspect in Deepak's murder.
Red Corner Notices are issued for fugitives wanted either for prosecution or to serve a sentence. A Red Notice is a request to law enforcement agencies worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action.
Sangwan alias Nandu had also claimed responsibility for the murder of Haryana political leader Nafe Singh Rathee of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) two years ago, along with a series of other violent crimes, including the killing of a builder in Paschim Vihar.
Rathee and a Jai Kisan party worker were gunned down near the Bahadurgarh railway crossing in Jhajjar.
In a social media post, Nandu claimed responsibility for Rathee's murder, stating it was due to the INLD leader's close ties with his rival, Manjeet Mahal. He alleged that Rathee and Mahal were close aides and that Rathee collaborated with Mahal’s brother, Sanjay, in property-related activities and in supporting Mahal in the killing of his brother-in-law and associates.
He also claimed responsibility for the murder of Rajkumar Dalal, a property dealer in west Delhi's Paschim Vihar, alleging that Dalal was illegally occupying plots on behalf of Mahal.
"I killed him. He was illegally occupying plots for my enemy, Manjeet Mahal. When Manjeet Mahal came out on parole, he even went to meet him," Nandu said in a social media post.
Further investigation in the case is underway, police said.
