Five tonnes of smuggled rice seized

Erode (Tamil Nadu) June 24 (PTI) The food cell CID Police, and Erode District Revenue Flying Squad personnel have seized 5 tonnes of smuggled rice meant for the Public Distribution System, and three persons have been arrested in this connection, official sources said.
    The officials who were conducting vehicle checks in Gobichettipalayam area stopped two goods vans at Kalingiam-Kottu Pullampalayam road and checked them. They found a total of 5,100 kg of rice, meant for supply to the public through ration shops, in those vehicles. Two drivers and another person travelling in one of those vans admitted that they bought the ration rice from a number of ration card holders in Gobichettipalayam area for a meagre price and were smuggling the consignment to Perundurai and Pethampalayam areas. They also said that they will be selling the rice to the North Indian workers employed in those areas.
    The officials seized both the rice and the vehicles. Police arrested those three persons and produced them before Judicial Magistrate who remanded them to judicial custody. EOM
