Kotdwar, Jun 23 (PTI) A 35-year-old woman was mauled to death by a man-eating tiger in the Dwarikhal area of Pauri district of Uttarakhand. Later, a forest department team arrived at the spot and trapped the tiger in a cage.
According to forest officials, Lata Devi was grazing her goats in the Halsi area on Sunday evening when she was attacked by the tiger. Hearing her cries, some villagers rushed to help, but could not save the woman.
Divisional Forest Officer Akash Gangwar said teams from the forest and police department set up a cage on Sunday night. The tiger was caught around midnight.
Officials stated that the tiger is a female, approximately 11 years old. Her one tooth is broken, and the others are worn out.
"She was not able to hunt due to old age, which was perhaps the reason why she attacked the woman," an official said.
Gangwar said financial assistance is being given to the family of the deceased. He also appealed to the people to move in groups when going out, keep the bushes around the houses trimmed, and use adequate lighting at night.
Meanwhile, some villagers alleged that the tiger had been roaming in the area for the last several days, and the forest department had been informed, yet it took no action.
On Saturday, a tiger injured a person in Nainidanda in Pauri Garhwal district of the state.
