Kolkata, Jun 21 (PTI) The International Day of Yoga was celebrated across West Bengal on Saturday with participants from all walks of life performing 'asanas' at public parks and community grounds.
In Kolkata, early morning sessions were organised in several localities, including Rabindra Sarobar, Eco Park, and the grounds near Victoria Memorial.
Despite light showers in some areas, a large number of yoga enthusiasts, senior citizens, school students and office-goers participated in yoga sessions.
West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose also hosted a yoga session at the Raj Bhavan premises with several enthusiasts participating.
Bose, who also took part in the session, thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for helping transform yoga into a global movement observed as the International Day of Yoga.
"It is a proud moment for Raj Bhavan, Kolkata, to be part of 'Yogam Sangam 2025' and for being so integrated with the over 1,00,000 locations across the length and breadth of the country in a collective movement for health, harmony and holistic wellbeing. I urge everyone to be part of this global transformation together, with Yoga at its heart, for all times to come," Bose said in a statement issued by his office.
The BSF, South Bengal Frontier, also organised yoga camps in the bordering areas of West Bengal, including North 24 Parganas, Nadia, Murshidabad and Malda, an official said, adding that besides the BSF officers, a large number of locals, elders, youth, and children participated in the camps.
Senior BJP leaders, including the party's Rajya Sabha MP Shamik Bhattacharya, participated in a yoga camp organised by the National Library in Kolkata.
In Siliguri and other parts of north Bengal, yoga events were held at tea gardens, schools, and on the banks of the Mahananda River.
Yoga sessions were also performed in the picturesque backdrop of Darjeeling hills.
In rural areas, local clubs and self-help groups conducted community yoga events, often accompanied by awareness drives on health and wellness.
Several private schools and colleges also observed the day with practice sessions and talks by yoga instructors.
While the West Bengal government did not organise any centralised event, various departments supported local-level programmes through civic bodies and educational institutions.
The International Yoga Day is celebrated every year on June 21. This year's theme is 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health'.
