Mumbai, Jun 20 (PTI) Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Friday said cooperation is merely an economic system for the world, but for India it has been a traditional philosophy of life.
He was speaking at a national seminar to mark the international year of cooperatives 2025 organised by the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED).
Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan delivered the keynote address at the event.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi established the ministry of cooperation to empower farmers and create a robust eco-system to support them, Shah said.
"Cooperation is an economic system for the entire world, but for India, it is a traditional philosophy of life," he stated.
A taxi service based on the cooperative model will be launched where taxi drivers will act as owners with profits going directly into their bank accounts, Shah said.
By increasing the cooperative sector's share in insurance, a fully cooperative-owned insurance company will soon be established, he said.
Union minister Chouhan said cooperatives are deeply ingrained in the "soil and roots of India."
"Farm models are being prepared for integrated farming, and there is brainstorming taking place on how farmers can benefit even with small land holdings," he said.
`Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan' is an effort to connect "Lab to Land" so that the benefit of scientific research reaches farmers, Chouhan said.
