New Delhi, Jun 12 (PTI) BJP's Satya Sharma and Sunder Singh were elected as the chairperson and deputy chairperson of the standing committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, respectively on Thursday.
The 18-member standing committee is the key panel that controls the finances of the corporation. Any project above the cost of Rs 5 crore has to be approved by the committee.
With the election of the chairperson, several proposals exceeding Rs 5 crore, that were in a limbo for over two years, are likely to see the light of the day.
Currently in the standing committee, the BJP has a clear majority, having 11 out of 18 members from the party.
Sharma, who won the polls after defeating her AAP rival Praveen Kumar, alleged no developmental work had taken place in the past two-and-a-half years.
She assured that now positive steps will be taken towards development, and everyone's cooperation will be essential.
"Our goal is to work with dedication to make Delhi clean and beautiful," she added.
Sharma had polled 11 votes, while her rival managed seven votes.
Sharma, who represents Gautampuri ward in North East Delhi, is a three-time councillor who has also served as mayor in the erstwhile East Delhi Municipal Corporation.
Her deputy, Sunder Singh, is an elected councillor from Bhati ward in south Delhi. He polled 11 votes as against AAP's Mohini Jeenwal, who received seven votes.
Before this, in December 2022, elections for the standing committee were conducted, after that in March 2023, the committee was supposed to be formed.
A two-minute silence was also observed over the plane crash in Ahmedabad.
