Himachal CM condoles death of Subedar Major Pawan Kumar in cross-border shelling

Shimla, May 10 (PTI) Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Saturday condoled the death of Subedar Major Pawan Kumar of 25 Punjab Regiment, who lost his life in cross-border shelling by Pakistani military in Jammu and Kashmir earlier in the day.
    Kumar, from Ward Number 4 of Shahpur in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district, died following shelling by Pakistani military in the Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir.
    According to Army officials, the shelling took place around 7.30 am on Saturday following which the news of his death was relayed to his family.
    His mortal remains are being transported from Poonch to Rajouri for post-mortem and necessary formalities, after which the body will be brought to Shahpur by road for the last rites, officials said.
    He was serving in the 25 Punjab Regiment and was set to retire on August 31, 2025 with his last official posting in Ambala. However, he had voluntarily opted for a posting on the border, they said.
    Kumar is survived by his parents, wife, son and a daughter. His father, Garaj Singh is a retired Havildar of the Indian Army.
    In his condolence message, the Chief Minister said that Subedar Major Pawan Kumar has made his supreme sacrifice for upholding the unity and sovereignty of the country and will be remembered by the people for ever.

    The Himachal Pradesh government stands with the bereaved family in this hour of grief and will extend all possible assistance, he said.
    The chief minister also prayed for peace to the departed soul and strength to the bereaved family to bear the irreparable loss.
