When Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta introduced Ethan Nwaneri as a stoppage-time sub against Brentford in September 2022, the delighted fans started chanting: “He’s got school in the morning.” He was 15 years and 181 days old: the youngest ever to appear in the Premier League. Now, at 19, his development seems to have stalled. But, he still has at least a year before he is relegated from special prospect to exciting prospect.
Born in London to a Nigerian father and an English-French mother, Nwaneri joined the Arsenal academy at eight. Throughout his rise, his best position has remained an open question. He is capable of operating as a No. 10, right-winger and even centre-forward. While creativity, vision, spatial awareness and dribbling have been among the left-footer’s defining attributes, weak-foot finishing has been flagged as an area to improve. Now 5’9”, he is also strongly built.
Despite making his debut in 2022, Nwaneri played only that one minute for the men’s team that season. In 2023-24, too, he got only a match; 13 minutes. His breakthrough campaign was 2024-25—37 matches, nine goals and two assists. Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney are the only English footballers to score more than him before turning 18. But, in the season that followed, his game time was cut short by Arsenal bringing in attacking options ahead of their title push and Max Dowman’s elevation to the reserve role. So, Nwaneri went on loan to Marseille in search of more minutes. However, a change of manager limited his game time in France, too. This season, he has been loaned out to Borussia Dortmund and had one assist in seven matches till mid-October, playing as a 10.
Nwaneri is eligible to represent Nigeria and France also. But, he has been doing well for England’s youth teams. He had joined the senior team for the squad’s preparation ahead of the World Cup, suggesting he was close to breaking in. Till he becomes a full England international, Nigeria remains an option and could even be better for a more fulfilling international career.
Like with all wunderkinds, the biggest challenge before Nwaneri is that even if he has a good career, there could be a perception that he did not fulfil his early promise. And it now seems like the Arsenal youth product’s career graph will be determined by his spell in Dortmund.
