'Shubh Yatra' review: A fun take on Gujarati 'US dream'

The movie is produced by Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan

Shubh-Yatra

The craze among the people of Gujarat to go to the US is well known. Many of them resort to illegal methods to turn their 'US Dream' into reality. Helmed by National Award-winning director Manish Saini, Gujarati movie Shubh Yatra (bon voyage), starring Malhar Thakar, deals with this subject subtly with plenty of humour, but does not come across as preachy.

Loosely based on the Kollywood film Aandavan Kattalai, the movie, produced by Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan, revolves around Mohan Patel (Thakar) and his friend Hardik Patel, played by Hemin Trivedi. Hailing from a small village, Mohan has a huge debt to pay owing to his failed milk business. He wants to return the money to farmers but can do this only if he can land a job in the US.

They find an agent who promises to help them move to the US. The agent they find turns out to be shady. While Hardik manages to secure a tourist visa, Mohan ends up working as an accountant in a drama theatre headed by veteran actor Darshan Jariwala where a friend of his from the village is an actor. Will Mohan fulfill his dream? Will he be able to pay off his debt?

The actors have great coming timings. All the actors, including junior artists, come up with fine performances. The director has done a great job showcasing the craze of people who would want to fulfill the US dream.
