American singer Mary Millben has alleged that the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), which is leading a nationwide agitation against the Election Commission of India, receives funding from certain US-based donors who are opposed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his leadership.

Millben, who gained popularity in India for her rendition of the national anthem, urged young Indians to rise and peacefully protest against the new outfit’s “disruptive spirit”.

“Do not fear, my young patriots. Your Prime Minister, who has served India for 25 years, 12 years as Prime Minister, elected three consecutive terms, is not going to bow to disruptive forces from my country,” she said in a social media post.

She also alleged that some US-based donors follow a global pattern of targeting conservative leaders.

“And these select donors have a pattern globally — target conservative global leaders, find a US-educated person from the country, radicalise them, send them back to the country, and fund them to start chaos and destruction. None of them has been successful but has impacted the development and governance of the country,” Millben said.

Millben, an African-American singer, performed India’s national anthem, Jana Gana Mana, at an event in the United States during Modi’s visit in 2023. She has repeatedly praised the Prime Minister and his government.

Last month, in an interview with IANS, Millben credited Modi with advancing infrastructure and technology, expanding opportunities in rural areas and empowering women and girls. She also praised his engagement with successive US presidents and his efforts to bring world leaders together in New Delhi.

In August, Millben criticised New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani over his opposition to an event featuring Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat in the city
