Amid a major row over media freedom in the United States, the White House on Monday launched Trump TV, a streaming platform that will exclusively feature presidential content.
The platform will stream footage of President Donald Trump’s past speeches, best moments, administration announcements, and the latest policy updates.
What is Trump TV?
Trump TV: The Essentials Stations was released through the White House’s official website and YouTube channel. The White House announced the launch on X, adding that the service would be available 24/7. While the platform will feature past speeches and public appearances, it will also include the latest administration updates and other official events.
The first footage that was streamed was of Trump delivering a speech at Mount Rushmore in July. The channel also showed Trump’s swearing-in ceremony as the 47th President of the United States.
Trump TV can be watched on the official White House website and the White House YouTube channel.
White House suspends media outlets
The move comes amid a major standoff between the administration and major US news organisations after three media outlets—CNN, MS Now and Politico—were suspended from the White House last week. Trump removed their press credentials after accusing them of publishing what he called ‘fake news.’
A hearing is scheduled for Wednesday after the three organisations filed a federal lawsuit, arguing that the restrictions violate their First Amendment rights.
In solidarity with CNN, four other networks—ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC—suspended White House pool coverage on Monday. Following this, Trump’s South Lawn helipad opening and United Nations General Assembly trip did not receive live television coverage, leading to the White House streaming it itself.
Declining media freedom
The Trump administration has introduced a page on the official white house website named ‘Media Offenders’ that features media outlets that allegedly produce factually inaccurate reports and are left-wing-supporting. The section even includes a ‘hall of shame’, ‘repeat offenders’ list, a ‘leaderboard ’, and ‘offender of the week.'
Legacy media, including CNN, The Washington Post, MSNBC, ABC News, The New York Times, and NBC News, are some of the outlets frequently mentioned. CNN has been featured as the ‘offender of the week’ for allegedly reporting Trump’s daytime somnolence, where he fell asleep multiple times at the Oval Office while people were talking to him.
“This is a blatant lie founded upon cherry-picked screenshots of President Trump blinking or reading. This moronic conspiracy theory from a 'medical expert' originated as a fringe talking point for chronically online leftists trying to save face after covering up Joe Biden’s cognitive decline for four years,” the ‘truth’ statement from the White House read, adding that the media outlets' claims are a “projection of their failure and shame.”
