US President Donald Trump on Friday defended his son’s wedding party being funded by a Russian oligarch. Democrats in the US launched an investigation this week after reports emerged that Umar Kremlev, a Russian businessman with close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, helped Donald Trump Jr. pay for a private island wedding party in the Bahamas with socialite Bettina Anderson in May.

Trump maintained that his son did nothing unethical, saying, “A person that he knows, I guess a friend of his, gave him a wedding party. That’s very common. I’ve heard of many people giving wedding parties.”

"But, as I understand it, he paid them back. I hear he paid them back," he added.

An insider quoted by Reuters said that the president’s son also made the repayment, though the total sum and timing are unclear.

ProPublica reported that Kremlev funded the Bahamas celebration with hundreds of thousands of dollars to rent the private island and even included a fireworks show, among other expenses. Trump’s daughter-in-law, Bettina, posted on Instagram confirming the private marriage ceremony in May, followed by a celebration in the Bahamas. The second event was hosted by Kremlev, Bettina said.

The top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee is still probing Kremlev’s role in funding the celebration.

Who is Umar Kremlev?

Umar Kremlev is a 44-year-old Russian oligarch, born in Serpukhov. He claims he was a boxer until the age of 19. In the years following, he was convicted of extortion in 2004 and assault in 2007.

By the mid-2010s, he became a boxing promoter. From here, he developed connections with people close to Putin. In 2017, he was secretary general of the Russian Boxing Federation and was elected president of the International Boxing Association in 2020.

He is reportedly married to the sister of a powerful major general in Russia’s federal protective service, which is believed to have influenced his selection as president.

He is believed to control three of Russia’s largest companies and has acquired Rolf, Russia’s largest car dealership group. With his growing influence, Kremlev joined the business delegation that travelled to China with Putin, right before the wedding in the Bahamas.

“Thanks to one person, today there are really all kinds of opportunities to earn money and to strive for more. That person, of course, is our president, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin,” Kremlev said in 2024.
