Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Tashkent, Uzbekistan—the first leg of his two-nation Central Asia tour—to bolster strategic and economic ties across the region.

PM Modi was received by the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, upon landing on Saturday.

PM Modi’s state visit to Tashkent centres on several key diplomatic and cultural engagements. It includes high-level bilateral discussions with Mirziyoyev to strengthen strategic partnerships and various sector reviews.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that both the leaders will meet to reflect on the full spectrum of bilateral relations, rooted in civilizational ties built over centuries and strengthened by strong people-to-people ties.

PM Modi and President Mirziyoyev will also review cooperation in trade and investment, defence, digital connectivity, energy, education and people-to-people ties at the Presidential Palace.

According to the MEA, the leaders will also share perspectives on advancing the shared developmental visions of Viksit Bharat 2047 and Uzbekistan-2030.

Apart from bilateral meetings, PM Modi is also expected to visit the Shastri Memorial in Tashkent and the Mahatma Gandhi Centre at the Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies.

After he visits Uzbekistan, the PM will travel to Bishkek in the Kyrgyz Republic for the 26th SCO Summit on August 31 and September 1, 2026.

Warm welcome by Indian diaspora

Modi received a warm reception from the members of the Indian community at a hotel here after he arrived in Uzbekistan. On Sunday, he also participated in a yoga programme organised by the Yoga Federation of Uzbekistan.

"Overwhelmed by the warmth and affection of the Indian community in Tashkent. Our diaspora is a living bridge between India and Uzbekistan, strengthening the bonds of friendship between our nations," Modi said in a social media post.

During his reception in Tashkent, PM Modi watched a fusion of Kathak and Andijan Polka dances, along with a performance by local children to the classic Indian hit 'Ude Jab Jab Zulfe Teri'.

He also watched a captivating fusion of Tabla with traditional Uzbek instruments, Doira and Chang.
