A 26-year-old Indian woman was shot dead in Toronto, Canada, in what police call a targeted attack. Navneet Kaur was killed near Humberwood Boulevard and Rexdale Boulevard.
Police arrested a 37-year-old man, Shranjeet Singh, who hails from Brampton, in connection with the killing.
Toronto police say that Kaur was attacked at around 7:23 am local time.
Investigators say that a man approached her and briefly spoke to her for about 30 seconds before firing a single shot at her and walking away.
Emergency responders rushed to the spot and attempted to save her, but she succumbed to her injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police launched a search operation involving multiple units, including drones, a K9 team and assistance from the Ontario Provincial police. The OPP located and arrested the suspect.
Singh was scheduled to appear in court Saturday morning at the Ontario Court of Justice in Toronto.
Singh has been charged with first-degree murder and failing to comply with an undertaking.
Duty Insp. Scott Bradbury said that Kaur was specifically targeted and that there was no risk to the public.
A witness who was drinking coffee nearby said that he saw a man approach the woman and speak with her briefly before opening fire.
Police have not disclosed the motive for the killing. It is also unknown if the victim and Singh knew each other.
The Police are continuing their investigation and have appealed to anyone who can provide information related to the case to come forward.
