An Indian student at the University of California was found dead on Saturday, days after he was reported missing in Berkeley.
Saketh Sreenivasaiah, 22, from Karnataka, had been missing since the morning of February 12. His body was discovered by authorities on Saturday, though further details are still pending.
The Indian Consulate in San Francisco extended its condolences, saying in a statement, "We offer our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones during this profoundly difficult time." The consulate assured the family of all necessary assistance in repatriating his body to India as soon as possible.
Saketh, a post-graduate student in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, had last spoken to his father, Sreenivasaiah, on February 9. His roommates later informed the family that Saketh had been missing since February 12.
On Saturday, the Karnataka government requested the Ministry of External Affairs to provide all necessary support, coordinate with local law enforcement, and assist the family during this challenging time.
Saketh's parents stated that his housemates had searched nearby areas and, after confirming he was untraceable, filed a missing person’s report with the Berkeley Police Department.
Yashovardhan Singh Thakur, Assistant Section Officer (Community Affairs) at the Consulate General of India in San Francisco, said earlier that Saketh's laptop, bag, and passport were recovered near the Anza Lake area. Thakur also confirmed that the consulate was working closely with the Berkeley Police Department to assist in the search and provide updates.
