After 10 were killed at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia, the suspected gunman was identified as Jesse Strang. More than 25 people are injured, including two who were airlifted to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Who was Jesse Strang?
The Canadian authorities are yet to confirm the identity. However, Canada-based news outlet, Juno News, spoke the suspect's uncle, Russell G. Strang, who revealed that Jesse Strang was a trans woman, aged 18. She was found dead from what is believed to be a self-inflicted injury, according to police.
A active shooter alert released by police initially said the suspect was described "as female in a dress with brown hair". A YouTube account purportedly owned by the suspected shooter shows that Jesse used the pronouns "she" and "her".
After the shooting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in the killing.
"Deeply shocked by the horrendous shooting in Canada. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones and wish a speedy recovery to the injured," Modi posted on X.
The previous time Canada witnessed a mass shooting of similar scale was in 1989 when a gunman slaughtered 14 women at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal.
In 2020, a gunman killed 22 people during a shooting rampage in Nova Scotia, sparking a 12-hour manhunt.
