Even as Donald Trump's approval rating has dropped considerably ever since he began the second term of his presidency, the US President keeps ensuring that he scores points at personal and political level. With Canada not giving in to his tariff threats, Trump has decided to rename Lake Ontario, which borders the two nations.

Trump on Tuesday said he was mulling to change the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America. ."The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don't expect to doing much business with Ontario any longer," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

While Trump is known for his bluffs, he has walked the talk on his rhetoric several times. In 2025, Trump threatened to change the name of Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America and did so within a matter of months.

Another renaming controversy was when the Trump administration decided to rename the US Department of Defense as the US Department of War. Obviously, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth became War Secretary. However, other than changes in signage, nothing much has changed as a formal name change legally require full congressional authorisation.

Earlier, the US Navy and Pentagon considered naming a new Ford-class aircraft carrier after Trump. This was unprecedented as US traditionally does not name ships after sitting presidents. The aircraft carrier was originally named after Doris Miller, a Black sailor who was the first African American to receive the Navy Cross for his bravery during the Pearl Harbour attack. The administration has not confirmed a final decision amid backlash.

Trump's administration had also planned to rename the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts to include Trump's name. However, the renaming move was ruled illegal by a federal judge.
