A Hindu man was lynched in Bangladesh over alleged blasphemy on Thursday.
Police officials who spoke to BBC Bangla said the incident took place in the Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh.
The group of attackers had beaten the man to death. They then tied his body to a tree before they set it on fire, Bhaluka police station Duty Officer Ripon Mia said.
The deceased, Dipu Chandra Das, worked at a local garment factory and lived in the Dubalia Para area as a tenant.
He had allegedly made objectionable remarks about Prophet Muhammad. Police said that individuals who were questioned about the incident could not recall where or how he had insulted Islam.
"An angry crowd caught him around 9 pm Thursday over allegations that he made derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad. They beat him to death and later set fire to the body," Ripon told BBC Bangla.
A video of the incident surfaced on social media, claiming to show the incident. A massive crowd is seen filming the man burning, on mobile phones. The authenticity of the video has not been verified.
The man's body was set on fire on the Dhaka Mymensingh highway.
Police rushed to the scene after the crime was reported. Traffic in the area was blocked for hours due to the mob.
Dipu’s body had been sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination. No case was filed after the incident, and police are trying to track the man’s family.
"We are trying to locate his relatives. Legal action will be taken in accordance with the law once a case is filed," said Ripon.
