Two people were killed and eight others critically injured in a shooting incident at Brown University in Rhode Island, the United States, on Saturday.
The suspect is still at large, and the police have launched a manhunt.
The university acknowledged widespread fear and uncertainty following the incident, which occurred at the Barus & Holley engineering building in Providence. The students were attending an exam when the suspect opened fire.
Police are working to identify the deceased victims, while hospital personnel are identifying those transported for medical treatment, officials said.
Providence Deputy Police Chief Tim O'Hara said that the suspected shooter is a male dressed in black.
"We are using every resource available to locate this suspect," he was quoted as saying by CNN.
O'Hara added that police are still determining how the suspect entered the Brown University building, but confirmed that he exited through the Hope Street side.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley, too, said police were searching for the shooter.
"We are a week and a half away from Christmas. And two people died today and another eight are in the hospital. So please pray for those families," Providence Mayor Brett Smiley told a news conference.
President Donald Trump termed the incident "terrible" and said: "All we can do right now is pray for the victims and for those that were very badly hurt".
The incident has once again ignited debates on the US's gun laws and mass shootings in schools, workplaces and places of worship.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, the US has witnessed 389 incidents of mass shootings this year.
