Bangladeshi actress Nusraat Faria was on Sunday arrested at the Dhaka airport in connection with a murder attempt during the protests against the Sheikh Hasina regime in mid-2024.
Faria was scheduled to fly to Thailand on Sunday morning when she was arrested by a team from Bhatara Police Station at the immigration checkpoint. Later she was taken to the Detective Branch office on Minto Road in Dhaka, according to The Daily Star, a local newspaper.
Who is Nusraat Faria?
Nuraat Faria, 31, portrayed ousted PM Hasina in the biopic on her late father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The 2023 movie, Mujib: The Making of a Nation, was directed by late filmmaker Shyam Benegal, was jointly produced by India and Bangladesh.
Faria who was radio jockey kicked off her acting career in 2015 with Aashiqui: True Love, another joint production by India and Bangladesh.
Officials said the actress is being questioned and further action will be taken based on the outcome of her interrogation. Faria is reportedly also accused of funding Awami League's movement against the student protests.
Besides Faria, 16 other actors were accused in an attempt to murder case on April 29 over the July apprising. These include Nipun Akter, Ashna Habib Bhabna, Apu Biswas, Zayed Khan, Suborna Mustafa, Symon Sadik, Jyotika Jyoti, Meher Afroz Shaon, Rokeya Prachy, Azizul Hakim and Sohana Saba.
Former PM Sheikh Hasina and more than 245 others are also named in the case.
Earlier, former Bangladesh President Mohammad Abdul Hamid, 81, fled to Thailand in a lungi at 3 am on May 8. He was under investigation for actions against the protesters during the July agitation and was a co-accused in a murder case wherein protesters were shot dead. He was Bangladesh president from 2013 to 2023.
