Volodymyr Zelenskyy suggested that Ukrainian territory that is not under Russian control should be brought under NATO in order to end the war.
The Ukrainian president told Sky News that the country did not consider the proposal before as it was never "officially" offered.
He said that to put an end to the hot stage of the war, the Ukrainian territory under the government's control should be brought under NATO umbrella. He said it has be done quickly so that Ukraine can take back the remaining territory diplomatically.
This is the first time Zelenskyy publicly spoke about a ceasefire scenario that leaves the Ukrainian territory occupied by Russia. He said a Nato-backed ceasefire would avoid future aggression from Moscow.
Zelenskyy, however, added that any such offer should be extended “within its internationally recognised border, you can’t give invitation to just one part of a country”.
Zelenskyy said all Ukrainian territory, including Crimea that was annexed by Russia in 2014, will remain part of the country. Around 20 per cent of Ukraine, including Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, are occupied by Russia.
