Warning sirens were sounded across Israel as the Hamas militant group launched a surprise military operation firing 5,000 rockets on the country during the early hours of Saturday. Israeli defence forces have advised residents near the Gaza Strip to stay within their homes.
Calling the operation ‘Operation Al-Aqsa Storm’, Hamas’ military wing has claimed responsibility for the attacks. Mohammed Deif, head of Hamas’ military wing al-Qassam Brigades said they have launched Operation Al-Aqsa Storm and they have decided to say, “enough is enough”. Al Jazeera reported that the rocket fire began at around 6.30am local time from multiple locations in Gaza.
Deif said, “We have already warned the enemy before. The occupation committed hundreds of massacres against civilians. Hundreds of martyrs and wounded died this year due to the crimes of the occupation,” Al Jazeera reported.
“We announce that the first strike, which targeted enemy positions, airports, and military fortifications, exceeded 5,000 missiles and shells,” the publication reported quoting Deif.
The Israeli defense forces tweeted, “Israelis across the country—on Shabbat and the holiday of Simchat Torah—woke up to sirens sounding and Hamas firing rockets at them from Gaza this morning. We will defend ourselves.” Israel’s military said it is striking targets in Gaza Strip and Israel has reportedly announced a state of war. Israeli defence minister has approved call-up of reservists.
