A Hong Kong pro-democracy protester allegedly got beaten up on the grounds of the Chinese consulate in Manchester. UK activists and lawmakers are demanding an investigation into the matter. The incident took place when a pro-democracy group called Hong Kong Indigenous Defence Force staged a protest outside the consulate. They were expressing dissent against the Chinese Communist Party Congress (CPC) happening the same day in Beijing. Xi Jinping's term is expected to increase by five years after the congress.

A video of the incident was shared widely on social media. It showed a scuffle break out on the pavement in front of the consulate, with shouts being heard as people rushed towards the consulate entrance. One protester is seen being dragged into the consulate and beaten by a group of men. It also shows local police entering the consulate grounds and trying to break up the violence.

The protester was taken to a hospital in stable condition, CNN reported. The Hong Kong Indigenous Defence Force said Chinese consular staff was involved in the beating. Greater Manchester Police said, “Enquiries are ongoing at this time to understand the full circumstances. A police patrol plan is in place in the area following this incident.”
