Indian-origin Uber driver dies in New York shootout

A 21-year-old Uber driver of Indian origin has succumbed to his injuries three days after he was struck in the head by a stray bullet during a shooting incident at Manhattan in New York.

According to reports, Kuldip Singh was caught in the crossfire between a 15-year-old boy and a passenger in his car in an apparent robbery bid on Saturday. Singh died of his injuries on Wednesday while the teenager, who was also wounded in the exchange, was being treated in a New York hospital.

The New York Daily News reported that the surgeons in the hospital were never able to remove the bullet from Singh's head and that he had lost most of his brain function before dying.

No arrests have been made in the incident. Police have released a video of the shootout and asked public's help to track down the accused.

Singh lived with his parents in Queens and was their sole provider, said his family who had migrated to the US from Punjab in 2018.

The latest incident comes even as New York City is facing a rising levels of violence for the past few years. The city has so far recorded 1,086 shootings, 314 murders, 1,009 rapes, and 14,783 serious assaults this year, according to police statistics.
