Norway: Man’s body found after lying undetected in flat for 9 years

The Norwegian police, on Thursday, launched an investigation on how a man’s body could lay in an Oslo apartment, undetected for nine years. 

According to the Norwegian police, the man, in his 60s was found by the caretaker of the building, in December who entered the flat to carry out maintenance work. 

When neighbour didn’t see him around, they thought he had moved or taken to an institution. The man, who got married multiple times, also had children. he was known to have kept to himself. He seemed to have died of natural causes.

Authorities make the year of his death to be 2011, based on a milk carton with a expiry date of May 2011. He had stopped receiving pension in 2018 when the Norwegian Labour and Welfare administration could not get in touch with him. His bills, however, continued to be paid automatically form his bank account. 

Oslo police inspector Grete Lien Metlid told Norwegian broadcasting company NRK, “This is a special case and it has made us ask questions about how it could happen.” 

"All his expenses were paid automatically from his bank account, everything was automatic," Professor Arne Krokan at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology told BBC.
