A kindergarten teacher was sentenced to death in Jiaozuo, Henan province in China after she poisoned 25 children last year and one of them died.

Wang Yun had put sodium nitrate in the kids’ breakfast after a fallout with a colleague. She had previously poisoned her husband after an argument.

The People’s Court in Henan province ruled that she should be “punished severely in accordance with the law”, calling Yun’s motives “despicable” and “vicious”.

Yun poisoned the morning porridge intended for the children in March last year after having an argument with another teacher on how best to handle the students.

At the time, one of the parents said they received a call from the school saying their child had vomited and fainted. He had said to the Global Times that other children were also throwing up, and they looked pale.

Yun was arrested soon after the incident.

Nitrite, a highly toxic substance used in fertilisers, is a carcinogen and is used in food preservation and even munitions and explosives. Nitrite can be toxic in high amounts and prevent the body from absorbing oxygen properly.

When Yun tried poisoning her husband in 2017 after an argument, she put nitrite in a glass that he used, causing him minor injuries.
